Why Is My Snapchat Camera Not Working?

If you find your front camera not working on Snapchat, systematically work through each of the following steps to quickly get your Snapchat camera working again. Of course, it is a good idea to first check that the camera app is working properly to be sure that the issue is specifically with Snapchat and not the camera itself.

Check Your Internet Connection

When you find your Snapchat selfie camera not working, the first thing to do is check your internet connection, since the app heavily relies on internet access to work properly.

On your iPhone go to Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure that the toggle button is on. Select your Wi-Fi network to join. A blue checkmark will indicate that you are connected. If there is not a blue checkmark or you see an error message, you will need to further troubleshoot your internet connection. This may include restarting your wireless router and/or checking that all of your cables are properly plugged in.

On your Android phone, open Settings > Network & Internet or Connections > Wi-Fi. Make sure the Wi-Fi is on. Then check the indicator at the top of the screen to make sure that your phone is picking up the signal. If there is no indicator or no bars, you will need to troubleshoot your internet connection. This may include restarting your wireless router and/or checking that all of your cables are properly plugged in.

Once you have checked to ensure that your internet connection is working, open the app to see if that was the right fix for Snapchat’s camera.

Restart Snapchat App

Once you have verified that you do not have any connection issues, try restarting the Snapchat app. Sometimes a simple reboot is all it takes to fix Snapchat.

iPhone users, double click the home button and swipe up on the Snapchat app to close it. Then reopen Snapchat.

To close apps on an Android device will depend on your specific device. For all devices, you will need to view all running apps. You may need to swipe up from the bottom, tap the square icon at the bottom of the screen, or press the physical button at the bottom of the device. Once you see the apps, locate Snapchat by swiping up and down or left and right, depending on your device. Then swipe up, or left or right (again, depending on the device), to close it. Then reopen Snapchat.

Update Snapchat App

If your Snapchat camera still is not working, it might be time to update the Snapchat app itself. Many apps like Snapchat are continually trying to improve by putting out new and updated versions. Update the app, and voila! Oftentimes the bug is fixed.

If you are updating Snapchat on your iPhone, open the App Store. Click on your profile. Scroll down to see a list of apps that need updates. When you locate Snapchat, click “Update.”

If you are updating Snapchat on an Android device, you will need to open the Google Play Store. Tap on your profile. Select “manage apps & device.” Find Snapchat, and if there is an update available it will be labeled “update available.” Select “update.”

After updating an app it is a good idea to either close and reopen the app or even completely restart your device.

Check App Permission

The next step is to check the app permissions. For Snapchat to work, the app needs camera access. Within settings, find “Additional Services,” select Manage > Permissions > Camera. Make sure that the camera permission is enabled.

Clear Lens Data

If you are already up-to-date with the latest version and you have verified the app has camera access, try clearing the Snapchat lens data. Locate Snapchat and open the app on your phone. Click on your profile button. Then click on the gear to get to settings. Scroll down to Lenses > Clear Local Lens Data. Restart the app.

Clear Snapchat App Cache

If clearing the lens data doesn’t work, go ahead and clear the entire Snapchat cache. To do this, go back to the settings icon within the Snapchat app. Under Account Actions > Clear Cache. Confirm that you want to clear the cache. Then restart the app.

Reinstall Snapchat App

After completing all of the above steps, it is time to reinstall the app. To do this you must first uninstall the app. Don’t worry if you have paid for Snapchat’s premium subscription, Snapchat Plus. You’ll be able to reinstall it without losing the subscription you have already paid for.

To uninstall Snapchat on your iPhone, find the app and hold it down. Then select Remove App > Delete App. Confirm that you want to delete the app. Then go to the App store, find Snapchat and reinstall it.

To uninstall Snapchat on your Android phone, first open the Google Play Store, then click on the Profile icon. Select Manage apps & devices > Manage. Locate Snapchat and tap “uninstall.” Once you have uninstalled the app, go back to the Google Play Store and reinstall Snapchat.

Conclusion

There is no need to stress if your Snapchat camera is not working as it is easy to fix Snapchat. Remember, make sure you have an internet connection, restart or update the Snapchat app, give your camera access, clear the cache and data, and reinstall the app. You’ll be back to snapping in no time.
