We all dream of being successful. However, success means different things to different people. Some dream of owning a fast car while others dream of having a job they love doing or, perhaps, even becoming online entrepreneur and being their own boss.
However you choose to measure your success, the following stepping stones to success should help you achieve it.

Toggle1. How to Be Successful: Define What Success Is to You
The first step to success and the one that all the others depend upon is to define exactly what success means for you. Would you consider yourself successful once you get to collect a big fat paycheck every week? Is the size of your home or the car you drive a measure of your success?
Ask two people what their idea of success is and they’re likely going to have a different answer. What you must do is decide what success means for you.
Try asking yourself these questions:
- What am I passionate about?
- Do I have a purpose in life?
- Do I have a skill?
- How would I feel if I became successful?
- What would personal success look like?
- What would professional success look like?
If you can answer these questions honestly, you’ll get a better idea of the bigger picture in terms of success. However, the ultimate question has to be “What does success mean to me?”
For some successful people, their success is inextricably linked to their purpose in life and their passions. While others look at success in a dollars and cents kind of way, others measure success in a more intangible way.
As soon as you’ve determined what success means for you then you’ll be able to move on to the next steps to success in life.
2. Set Actionable Goals
It’s totally unrealistic to expect success to drop in your lap overnight. To achieve it you have to put in some effort and give it your all. However, before you get your hands dirty with the work, it requires some planning.
A key part of the planning process is setting goals. How are you going to know what you’re aiming for if you don’t set goals?
The ultimate goal is to be successful, but that’s far too broad a term to be effective. Instead, you have to narrow in and set actionable goals. It’s also going to be beneficial if those goals are achievable.
There are four small steps you must follow when setting your goals:
- Focus on the identity you want to embody rather than something you want to achieve.
- Set a target date.
- Work out how you’re going to do it.
- What emotion would you like to feel?
The final step might seem a little confusing, but deciding how you want to feel when you’ve accomplished your specific goal is great motivation.
Something else you can do to keep up the momentum and stay motivated is with a vision board, habit tracker, or planner.
3. Be Passionate
If you don’t love what you’re doing, why should you continue to do it day after day? Think about your job and your career. You might be a content writer, but is your real passion to write a book?
On the other hand, you might be a stay-at-home housewife, but what you really want to do is start your own dog-walking business or act on other business ideas you have.
If you really want to do something and get the opportunity to do it, grab it with both hands. When you’re doing something you’re passionate about, you’ll feel more motivated, and be more creative.
In turn, this is more likely to be a prosperous thing for your to do, both financially and personally.
In the words of the actress Katharine Hepburn:
“If you have to support yourself, you had bloody well better find some way that is going to be interesting.”

4. Develop a Success Mindset
Developing and maintaining a success mindset is important, but what does it actually mean? It means you’ve got a positive but at the same time realistic outlook in terms of your success. The key aspects you need to focus on include:
- Having the ability to be flexible
- Being willing to adapt
- Not allowing anything or anyone to get in the way of you achieving your goals
- Believing in yourself and that you’re worthy and capable of achieving success
- Being driven and dedicated to working hard in order to meet your goals
- Feeling confident in yourself and having faith in your abilities
Success is very closely related to your mindset. For example, if you’re constantly putting yourself down, are unwilling to work, and feel worthless, you’re unlikely to succeed. However, if you feel confident, are willing to put in the work, and regularly lift yourself up, it’s far more likely that you’ll achieve success.
A good way of boosting yourself is with positive affirmations for success or self-confidence affirmations if you need to increase self-esteem. Find some that you like and repeat them every day, loudly in front of the mirror. You might feel a little silly to start with, but they’ll soon start to have a positive effect on your mindset.
If you’re embarrassed about shouting at yourself in the mirror, use Post-it notes and leave the affirmations around your house. Another option is to use your smartphone and set some reminders.
5. Focus
Success isn’t going to be possible without focus. The two are unavoidably linked. However, even the most successful person has to remind themselves of the importance of focus from time to time.
To be totally focused, you have to be in pursuit of a mission and vision. A successful businessman who agreed with this was John Francis Welch Jr.
He was a successful businessman but entered the history books when he received a retirement severance payment of $417 million, the largest in history up to that point. Would you consider this a measure of your success? Quite probably.
6. Work Hard
If you want to be successful, you have to put in the work. It’s not something that’s going to fall into your lap or be handed to you on a plate.
You’re never going to achieve your goals if you’re not prepared to put in some hard work. It’s also going to take time and you’ll find yourself working constantly towards your goals.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. At times, you might also need to adjust your path, so don’t stress about doing it.
What’s most important during such setbacks is to keep going along your path to success. If you want to achieve it, giving up isn’t part of the picture.
7. Be Persistent
Persistence is about being self-motivated to continue to pursue your goal, despite obstacles or challenges that might get in your way. It is correlated with success and can be more important than how hard you work or how well you plan. It can also be more important than background and education.
It is already a big step to just know how to use your self-motivation to reach your goals.
If you want to be more persistent, think about working on the following:
- Having an all-consuming vision
- Inner confidence
- A burning desire to succeed
- Ability to adapt and adjust
- Highly developed habits
- Be committed to lifelong learning
- Choose role models that are your guides and mentors
8. Push the Limits
So many people stick with thinking inside of the box. Don’t be one of those achievers and allow fear to get in your way. There’s a lot of competition when it comes to being ordinary. The only way you’re going to stand out is to be different.
It’s very easy to get caught up in the status quo and believe that you’re restricted by limits. Don’t make the same mistake and be prepared to push the boundaries, because then you’ll find it easier to excel.
